Blowing the Consulting Myths Out of the Water
I love the Internet, who doesn’t! It’s a fantastic learning playground, I can reach out people clean across the world in milliseconds, share experiences with them, laugh and cry with them, and do business with them. What’s not to like!
Well, setting aside those who are economical with the truth and the trolls, there’s a shed load of misinformation posted every day: information that with the support of the unsuspecting, quickly develops into a kind of alternative truth.
Consulting has not been immune to this. So let me address some of the most common myths about starting your own consulting business, and blow them away for ever.
Myth #1 – It costs a fortune to set up as a consultant.
WRONG – You can get started with less than $100 in your pocket.
Myth #2 – I need to be an expert in everything.
WRONG – You just need to know more than your target clients, and where to go for help!
Myth #3 – I need formal qualifications or to have certifications to become a consultant.
WRONG – The majority of clients couldn’t give a fig about formal qualifications, they are purely focussed on results.
Myth #4 – I will need an office and employees.
WRONG – You can start consulting from home or from a coffee shop working alone, and if you are not interested in empire building, keep it that way forever – I did!
Myth #5 – I will need to work full-time in my business.
WRONG – You can choose your own hours, and work part-time if you wish. You can easily build your own successful consulting business whilst holding down a full-time job or managing the kids!
Myth #6 – There are lots of consultants already out there, I can never compete.
WRONG – The market is massive, I mean absolutely MASSIVE, and it is getting bigger. Digital marketing is growing, small businesses are increasingly recognising that they need help to find customers and compete.
Myth #7 – There’s little or no profit in consulting.
WRONG – Profit margins can be HUGE. Earnings can reach 7-figures and beyond if you approach it the right way!
Myth #8 – I need to be some sort of sales ‘personality’ in order to get clients.
WRONG – Of course it would certainly help if you are an expert sales person, but an very profitable business can equally be built by an introvert. I built a 7-figure business using my laptop and a phone, and I absolutely hate ‘selling’ and hate networking!
OK, so that’s put the myths out of the way. Believe me when I tell you that if you are thinking about starting out as a consultant, ignore the urban myths, focus and get to it – you can really do it if you put your mind to it!
